Draper Goes Back-to-Back

Indooropilly’s Scott Draper successfully defended his Walsh Consulting Engineers Sunshine Coast Men’s Open Amateur Championship on the weekend, emerging victorious from the field of 176 players.

In what is an annual Easter pilgrimage to Headland for the former tennis and golf professional, Draper got off to a great start with a 3-under par round of 69 on Saturday, to hold a 2-stroke lead over Mount Coolum’s Jake Smith.

A topsy-turvy start to round 2 on Sunday – with birdie/bogey/bogey/birdie, was not enough to derail his defence though, with Draper steadying to record 11 pars, two bogeys (9th and 14th), and a birdie on 11 to close out a one-over par round of 73, for a 36-hole total of 142 (2 under par).

Smith Twin Waters’ Thomas Hutchinson and Headland’s Adam Richards and Ben Duncombe all put pressure on Draper at different stages of the front nine, but could not catch the defending Champion.

Richards and Duncombe (both tied 3rd) finished the event as the best of the Headland members.

Cooper Field (Pelican Waters) won the Junior (under 18) section with scores of 74 and 75.  The Seniors trophy was won by Caloundra’s Peter Wouters (76.80 – 154) – 35 years after he won the overall Championship for the first of three times.
